Measuring and explaining the extent of occupational gender segregation
Ranošová, Tereza ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Žigraiová, Diana (referee)
Occupational gender segregation is one of the most visible characteristics of labour markets all over the world, the Czech Republic is not an exception. In 2013 more than 57% of employed men or women would have to change their job so that the proportion of each gender could be the same in each occupation. The measure increases to 60.19% when housework is treated as another occupation. Moreover, men are often almost completely isolated from women - more than 18% of them work in an occupation with less than one percent of female colleagues. Unexpectedly, the youngest cohorts in the sample experience higher segregation than men and women in their thirties and forties. In the second half of the thesis occupations are characterised by their demanded abilities and work styles, contexts, values and interests (utilizing the O*NET database). It is tested which of these characteristics actually matter for the concentration of men or women in an occupation. Altogether, eighteen characteristics proved significant. The most surprising result is that higher demanded levels of mathematics and memorization attract the opposite gender than is assumed in the literature. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Family and school as the agents of socialization reproducing gender stereotypes in connection with gender segregation at the labour market
Hokeová, Lucie ; Kubišová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Havlík, Radomír (referee)
In the diploma thesis we ask the question whether the important agents of socialization family and school reproduce gender stereotypes which associate women with the role of a carer about family and household and men with the role of a breadwinner and with the orientation to the field of technology. We focus on whether family and school reproduce these stereotypes in connection with the definition of a career and in relation to horizontal and vertical segregation at the labour market. The reproduction of gender stereotypes viewing women as carer about family and household and men as breadwinners and the reproduction of gender stereotype connecting rather men than women with technical orientation are conjoined with gender scheme theory of Sandra Bem and with Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus. The diploma thesis aims at the Czech society, mainly in the period from 2001 to 2011. To answer the question we ask in the diploma thesis we draw on literature, on quantitative and qualitative research dealing with the themes we are concerned with, on statistics of Czech Statistical Office, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Institute for Information on Education, and on selected data from international longitudinal research International Social Survey Programme...

Koloušková, Barbora ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (advisor) ; Cidlinská, Kateřina (referee)
This work presents complex look at the issue of gender segregation of the labour market in the Czech republic. Gender segregation in the labour market is one of the main causes of gender inequality. It causes different representation of men and women in different occupations and working positions. Author describes womens' position in the labour market and follows with data analysis, that shows existence of this problem in the Czech republic and its' range. She presents basic theories explaining gender segregation of the labour market and examines its' causes and effects. She devides segregation into the horizontal and vertical segregation, which are eventually connected to show the degree of overall segregation. Horizontal segregation refers to disproportionate representation of men and women in different sectors and jobs. Vertical segregation shows their presence in various working positions. The degree of segregation has only been decreasing very slowly during the past 20 years and the Czech labout market is still highly segregated into female and male occupations. This segregation causes social and wage differentiation which is detrimental to women.
